Part 1 of an extended interview of me conducted by musician, philosopher, creative instigator, ex-Hoosier, Alison Niedbalski on 6/8/11. It was meant for her new blog about the bay area music scene, whoswhatnow, in which some subset of this interview will be transcribed and edited down. Here is the complete unexpurgated audio version.
This part deals with: 1. how I started doing music, 2. my scatting "language" and its origins, 3. what I think about when I'm improvising, and 4. my perceptions of the differences between the training of improvisors and the training of musicians currently situated within the western classical idiom.
The track starts with me asking her questions about her music, and then quickly (after about 2 minutes or so) launches into her asking things of me.
